AI POLICY

How we use AI — and when we don't.

The Missouri Historical Society stewards a 160-year-old documentary record. We use generative AI sparingly, with attribution, and never as a substitute for curatorial judgment.

Where AI shows up on this site

If we use AI to summarize, transcribe, or translate any user-facing content, we mark it clearly. We do not use AI to generate exhibition labels, curatorial essays, or descriptions of artifacts.

What AI cannot do at the Society

AI is not authorized to make accessioning decisions, write public-facing exhibition copy, generate interpretive content about specific communities or individuals, or transcribe restricted records. Those remain human judgments.

How we approach the future

We expect search engines and AI assistants to summarize parts of this site. We publish structured data (schema.org) on every page so those summaries are accurate, attributed, and link back here.
